His bullets would never pierce the steel that covered the gray monster, "says O'Flaherty, to characterize the protagonist's wartime experience. In his short narrative, Liam O'Flaherty employs images. He writes, "The woman whirled around and fell with a shriek into the gutter." This is an example of imagery because it depicts what it was like during the war to see many people die yet not exhibit any emotion. The author utilizes situational irony at the conclusion of the narrative when disclosing that the sniper he killed was his own brother.
