An empty 2,500 kg train car is headed northbound at a velocity of 5 m/s. Ahead of the first car, an empty 1,500 kg car is headed

northbound on the same track at 1 m/s. The faster train bumps into the slower one, and they combine into one train. What is the velocity of the two-car train? 1 m/s 3 m/s 3. 5 m/s 5 m/s.

The velocity of the two-car train is 3.5 m/s.

To solve the problem above, we use the law of conservation of momentum

Law of conservation of momentum: States that, for a closed system, the total momentum before collision is equal to the total momentum after collision.

⇒ Formula:

mu+m'u' = V(m+m')..................... Equation 1

⇒ Where:

  • m = mass of the faster train
  • m' = mass of the slower train
  • u = initial velocity of the faster train
  • u' = initial velocity of the slower train
  • V = common velocity of the two trains

⇒ make V the subject of the equation

  • V = (mu+m'u')/(m+m')....................... Equation 2

From the question,

⇒ Given:

  • m = 2500 kg
  • m' = 1500 kg
  • u = 5 m/s
  • u' = 1 m/s

⇒ Substitute these values into equation 2

  • V = [(2500×5)+(1500×1)]/(2500+1500)
  • V = [12500+1500]/(4000)
  • V = 14000/4000
  • V = 3.5 m/s.

Hence, The velocity of the two-car train is 3.5 m/s

N 1800kg car has an<br> of 3.8m/s? What is it<br> on the car?<br> acceleration<br> force acting
nevsk [136]

Answer:

6840 N

Explanation:

The force acting on the car can be found by using Newton's second law:

F = ma

where

F is the net force on the car

m is the mass of the car

a is its acceleration

For the car in this problem,

m = 1800 kg

a=3.8 m/s^2

Substituting,

F=(1800)(3.8)=6840 N

A bee flies 25 m north of the hive, then 10 m east, 5 m west , and 10 m south. How far north and east of the hive is it now? Exs
GaryK [48]
Since then we traveled 25 meters north, but 10 m south, you would subtract 25-10 and get 15. The other directions don't affect it since they are moving horizontally and north and south are vertically. You do the same with east and west 10-5=5 m east. The bee is then 15m north and 5m east

A fence 8 ft high (w) runs parallel to a tall building and is 24 ft (d) from it. Find the length (L) of the shortest ladder t
AveGali [126]

Answer:

25.3 ft

Explanation:

The illustration of the problem is shown the attached image.

The length of the ladder can be calculated using the Pythagoras theorem:

Hypotenuse^2 = opposite^2 + adjacent^2

The hypotenuse is the length of the ladder.

Hypotenuse = \sqrt{opposite^2 + adjacent^2}

L^2 = BC^2 + (24 + AE)^2........1

Triangle ABC is similar to triangle AEF, hence:

\frac{BC}{8} = \frac{AE + 24}{AE}

BC = \frac{8(AE + 24)}{AE}.................2

Substitute 2 into 1

L^2 = (\frac{8(AE + 24)}{AE})^2 + (24 + AE)^2

Let AE = x

L^2 = (\frac{8x + 192}{x})^2 + (24 + x)^2

    = (8 + \frac{192}{x})^2 + (24 + x)^2

Minimize L with respect to x.

2\frac{dL}{dx} = 2(8 + \frac{192}{x})(-\frac{192}{x^2}) + 2(24 + x)

       =
