  • When a magnesium is heated, it burns in air with a dazzling white flame to form a white powder called <u>Magnesium oxide. </u>

  • Magnesium + oxygen → Magnesium oxide.

  • The burning of magnesium in air to form magnesium oxide is an example of a chemical reaction . In this chemical reaction there are two reactants ' magnesium and oxygen ' but only one product ' magnesium oxide '. The properties of the product magnesium oxide are entirely different from those of the reactants magnesium and oxygen.

<u>Balanced Equation</u> –

\purple{\bf{2Mg + O_2 = 2MgO}}

<u>Physical states</u> –

  • Magnesium → Mg ( In Solid State)

  • Oxygen → \sf{O_2} ( Gaseous State)

  • Magnesium Oxide → MgO ( In Solid State Or White powder)

When a solute is added to a solution why does it remain homogeneous?
Olenka [21]
<h3>Answer:</h3>

                 When a solute is added to a solution, it remains homogeneous because the solute is soluble in given solvent.

<h3>Explanation:</h3>

                         Homogeneous mixtures, also called true solutions are those mixtures in which the components proportions are same throughout in any given sample. For example, the mixture of table salt (NaCl) and water. When the solution is unsaturated and further NaCl is added to it, it will dissolve the NaCl because the saturation point is still not reached. Remember, as "<em>Like Dissolves Like</em>" NaCl being polar in nature will interact with water molecules and will dissociate into Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions surrounded by δ- O and δ+ H atoms of water molecules.

<h3>Conclusion:</h3>

                  In order to form a Homogeneous mixture the solution must be unsaturated, solvent must have affinity for incoming solute particles and the size of solute should be equal to 1 Â (Angstrom).

If the sample has a total mass of 5.76 g and contains 1.79 g k, what are the percentages of kbr and ki in the sample by mass
Luden [163]

The percentages of KBr and KI  in the sample by mass is 80.68 and 19.32 % respectively.

<h3>What is Molar Mass ?</h3>

Molar mass is defined as the mass contained in 1 mole of sample.

It is given that

the sample has a total mass of 5.76 g contains KBr and KI

and contains 1.79 gm of K is present

what is the percentage of KBr and KI in the sample

Molecular weight of K = 39

Molecular weight of Br = 79.9

Molecular weight of I = 126.9

In KBr the mass percentage of K is 39/(39+79.9) = 32.89%

In KI the mass percentage of K is 39/(39+126.9) = 23.5%

Let the mass of KBr present in the sample is x

K will be 0.3289 x

and let the mass of KI present be y

K will be 0.235y

x +y =5.76

0.3289x+0.235y = 1.79

0.0939y = 0.1045

y = 1.1125 gm

x = 5.76-1.1125

x = 4.6475 gm

% of KBr = (4.6475/5.76  )*100 = 80.68 %

% of KI = (1.1125/5.76) *100 = 19.32%

The ksp of cadmium hydroxide, cd(oh)2, is 7.20 × 10-15. calculate the solubility of this compound in g/l.
olga nikolaevna [1]
When the solubility is the amount of solute that dissolved in a unit volume of the solvent.

and when the balanced reaction equation is:

so, by using the ICE table:

            Cd(OH)2(s) ↔  Cd2+  +  2OH-

initial                               0             0

change                          +X           +2X

Equ                                  X             2X

so the Ksp expression = [Cd2+] [OH-]^2

and we have Ksp = 7.2 x 10^-15

and when we assume the solubility = X

by substitution:

7.2 x 10^-15 = (X) (2X)^2

7.2 x 10^-15 = X*4X^2

7.2 x 10^-15 = 4X^3

∴X = ∛(7.2x10^-15)/4

      = 1.22 x 10^-5 M

∴ the solubility = X = 1.22 x 10^-5 M
