Suppose a rescue helicopter is 700 feet above sea level descends 300 feet to search for debris or any other signs of a submarine

in trouble. When the captain does not see anything, he ascends 200 feet and stays at that altitude while he tries to get a radio signal from the submarine. A few moments later he speaks to the captain and is informed that the submarine is 122 feet below sea level. How far is the helicopter from the submarine?

Answer:

The helicopter is 722 feet from the submarine.

Step-by-step explanation:

700 - 300 = 400

400 + 200 = 600

600 - 122 = 722

Simplifying rational expressions<br><br> h-2 divided by h squared+3h-10
EleoNora [17]
Long division here. Divide h^2+3h-10 by h-2 to get h+5. That means when you multiply h-2 by h+5, you get what you started with, h^2+3h-10

Answer: (1) d = 25t+240\,,\,\,0\leq t\leq 6; (2) 340 miles. See details below.

Explanation:

The key here is to know that given the speed and time traveled you can determine the (distance traveled) as (speed) x (time).

They want us to keep the time traveled for the first part of the journey as a variable, so let us do that. The speed during the first part is 65mph, so the distance for the first part is

d_1 = 65 \cdot t

Knowin that the total ride was 6 hours, the  distance in the second part (with speed of 40 mph) is as follows:

d_2 = 40 \cdot (6-t)

So the total distance in terms of t is:

d = d_1 +d_2 = 65\cdot t + 40\cdot (6-t)=65t-40t+240\\d = 25t+240\,,\,\,0\leq t\leq 6

(this is the answer to the first question). Note that t can range form 0 to 6 hours but outside of this range the expression is not applicable.

If we know t=4 hours:

d = 25\cdot4+240=340

The answer to the second question is 340 miles.
