1.  It intensified anti-Japanese feelings in the United States.

The defense forces resisted the Japanese forces on Baatan for a full three months, until the final fall of Baatan on April 9, 1942. In order to avenge the enemy, the Japanese did an infamous act - forcing defeated US and Philippine troops to march 130 km from Baatan to Japan's most famous prisoner of war, O'Donnell.

United States were winning the war, but it already lasted for four years. They weren't moving so fast, there were many casualties, a lot of resources were spent. Truman wanted to make Japan give up on fighting, and according to him this was the only way. Truly, just a couple of weeks after the bombs were dropped Japan capitulated.
