The balanced half-reaction: Cr²⁺⁺(aq) → Cr⁴⁺(aq) + 2e⁻.
Chromium(II) cations two electrons and became chromium(IV) cations.

The balanced half-cell reaction for the oxidation of aqueous chromium (II) cations to aqueous chromium (IV) cations is \boxed{{\text{C}}{{\text{r}}^{2 + }}\left( {aq} \right) \to {\text{C}}{{\text{r}}^{4+}}\left({aq}\right)+2{e^-}}.

Further Explanation:

Redox reaction:

It is a type of chemical reaction in which the oxidation states of atoms are changed. In this reaction, both reduction and oxidation are carried out at the same time. Such reactions are characterized by the transfer of electrons between the species involved in the reaction.

The process of <em>gain of electrons</em> or the decrease in the oxidation state of the atom is called <em>reduction</em> while that of <em>loss of electrons</em> or the increase in the oxidation number is known as <em>oxidation</em>. In redox reactions, one species lose electrons and the other species gain electrons. The species that lose electrons and itself gets oxidized is called as a reductant or reducing agent. The species that gains electrons and gets reduced is known as an oxidant or oxidizing agent. The presence of a redox pair or redox couple is a must for the redox reaction.

The general representation of a redox reaction is,

{\text{X}}+{\text{Y}}\to{{\text{X}}^+}+{{\text{Y}}^-}

The oxidation half-reaction can be written as:

{\text{X}}\to{{\text{X}}^+}+{e^-}

The reduction half-reaction can be written as:

{\text{Y}}+{e^-}\to{{\text{Y}}^-}

Here, X is getting oxidized and its oxidation state changes from 0to +1 whereas B is getting reduced and its oxidation state changes from 0 to -1. Hence, X acts as the reducing agent whereas Y is an oxidizing agent.

Initially, chromium is present in +2 oxidation state. Its oxidation state changes from +2 to +4 oxidation state. The oxidation state of Cr is increased during the reaction so oxidation is taking place. The balanced oxidation half-cell reaction is as follows:

{\text{C}}{{\text{r}}^{2+}}\left({aq}\right)\to{\text{C}}{{\text{r}}^{4+}}\left({aq}\right)+2{e^-}

nata0808 [166]

Answer:

<em>The volume of the air breath per day is =12240 L day ^ -1 and he volume of oxygen breathe each day is= 2570.4 L</em>

Explanation:

<em>Complete question: </em><em>The oxidizing agent our bodies use to obtain energy from food is oxygen (from the air). If you breathe 17 times a minute (at rest), taking in and exhaling 0.50 L of air with each breath, what volume of air do you breathe each day? Air is 21% oxygen by volume. what volume of oxygen do you breathe each day?</em>

<em>Solution</em>

<em>Given that,</em>

<em>The volume of the air with each breath = 0.50L</em>

<em>The frequency of breath is = 17 times per minute</em>

<em>the next step is to calculate the volume of the air breath per day</em>

<em>The volume of the breathed air = volume of air breathed/ breath * 17 breaths/min * 60 minutes / per hour * 24 hours/ per day</em>

<em>= 0.50L/ breath * 17 breath /min * 60 minutes / per hour * 24 hours/ per day</em>

<em>= 12240 L day ^ -1</em>

<em>The next step is to calculate the oxygen breathed per day:</em>

<em>The volume of oxygen breathed = volume of air breathed * percent oxygen in air/100</em>

<em>= 12240 L day ^ -1 * 21 /100</em>

<em>= 2570.4 L day ^ -1 </em>

<em>Therefore for each day, the volume of oxygen breathe is 2570.4 L</em>

Answer:

a) The balloon filled with helium will float higher because helium is less dense than gas X

Explanation:

Since gases are known to not have fixed density, they take up the density of their containers, let us find the density of the gas in first balloon.

 Density is the mass per unit volume;

         Density  = \frac{mass}{volume}

Insert the parameters and solve;

    mass of gas  = 7.52g

     volume of the gas  = 27.8L

          Density  = \frac{7.52}{27.8}   = 0.271g/L

Let us compare the two densities;

 Density of gas  = 0.271g/L

 Density of helium  = 0.179g/L

We see that the density of the gas is higher than that of helium, so, it not float as high as the balloon with helium. The balloon with helium is lighter.
