They were searching for an isolated place where they could ensure their security and survival. After the murder of their founder and prophet Joseph Smith and the religious discrimination they have suffered, the Mormons knew they have to leave their old place where they were settling. Under the leadership of Brigham Young, the Mormons ventured to west and found the Great Salt Lake Valley in Utah. Seeing that the place was isolated and wild, they immediately built a dam and planted turnips and potatoes and sent a word to their fellow Mormons about the land they have found and claimed.
