NH₄I(s) → NH₃(g) + HI(g)

Where the salt is ionic. So, in aqueous solution it dissociates into NH₄⁺ and I⁻

The ammonium ion NH₄⁺ is the conjugate acid of the weak base NH₃.

So, the mixture of this weak base NH₃ and its conjugate acid NH₄⁺ converts the solution into a buffer.
