Newton's 2nd regulation, F = ma is a vector equation. It says that the net force (a vector) acting on a mass m (a range of) causes an acceleration (a vector) of the object within the same path as the net force.

A simple mathematical relationship exists between the mass of an item (m), the net force at the item (f) and its acceleration (a). The acceleration of an object is without delay proportional to the net force and indirectly proportional to the item's mass (a = f/m).

For example, displacement, velocity, and acceleration are vector quantities, while speed (the magnitude of velocity), time, and mass are scalars. To qualify as a vector, a quantity having magnitude and direction must also obey certain rules of combination.
