It's true desertion was not a major problem in the confederate army as it was in the union army.

Desertion, as well as evading conscription, is considered an act of disloyalty, at least legally, and is sometimes punishable by death. , a military protest riot occurred.

Most of the soldiers were inexperienced and undisciplined. It quickly and easily dashed any Union hopes of winning the war.

Desertion turned out to be a much more difficult problem for both sides. Official statistics show that over 103,000 Confederates and over 200,000 Union soldiers deserted, with some estimates as high as 280,000.
