The Missouri Compromise Act, passed by the US Congress in 1820, admitted Missouri as the 24th state to the Union.
Northern congressmen attempted unsuccessfully to attach amendments preventing further slaveholding after the area requested sovereignty without constraints on slavery.
When Maine (which was once a part of Massachusetts) applied for statehood, Henry Clay brokered a deal that saw Maine admitted as a free state and Missouri admitted as a slave state.
Slavery was subsequently outlawed in areas north of Missouri's southern boundary.
Clay's solution highlighted the sectional divide while appearing to resolve the slavery-extension issue.
