|x-1| if x>1 how do you simplify this

Use the definition of absolute value.

|x| = \begin{cases} x & \text{if } x \ge0 \\ -x & \text{if } x < 0 \end{cases}

The absolute value is always non-negative. So if x is already non-negative, |x|=x is unchanged. But if x is negative, then |x|=-x because multiplying x by -1 makes it positive.

Now, if x>1, then by the definition of absolute value,

x > 1 \implies x - 1 > 0 \implies \boxed{|x - 1| = x - 1}

ElenaW [278]

Easy answer, Neighborhood Bank. But to see how:

$7,500 * 0.015 (1.5%) = $112.50

$112.50 a day times 360 days = $40,500

$40,500 times 20 = $810,000.

$810k times 20 = $16,200,000. (16.2mil)

$112.50 times 20 = $2,250.

Find the zeros of the polynomial x^2 + 8x + 16
Scorpion4ik [409]

hey mate,

x^2 + 8x + 16 = 0

<=>

(x+4)^2 = 0

As we know that (a+b)^2 = a^2+b^2+2ab

then

(x+4)^2 = 0

<=> (x+4) = 0

<=> x = -4

so there is one solution x = -4

thanks

Please do the area and perimeter for both questions! And if u can please explain how! Thank you
KiRa [710]
Question 1 - You need to split the L shape into  2 shapes.

6mm x 2mm = 12mm

and

5mm x 2mm = 10mm

add 12mm and 10mm
the area is 22mm squared (a little 2 above the mm)

question 2 - you need to do the same

4mm x 2mm = 8mm squared
7mm x 2mm = 14mm squared
area - 22mm squared
