(c) Carbon compounds also exhibit a kinetic isotope effect. How do you expect it to compare in magnitude with that for hydrogen

compounds? Why?

Normal kinetic isotope effect for the hydrogen compound effect are around 1 to 8. But for carbon compounds effects are much smaller and are usually between 1.02 and 1.10.

The percentage change in mass is directly correlated with the difference in kinetic isotope effect magnitude. Smaller percent mass changes (increased by two mass units) occur when an atom like carbon is replaced with its isotope, however larger impacts are observed when hydrogen is replaced with deuterium since the percentage mass change is quite big (mass is being doubled).

The phenomenon known as the kinetic isotope effect (KIE) is brought on by the variable reaction speeds that are displayed by isotopically substituted compounds. When it comes to studying reaction kinetics, mechanisms, and solvent effects, isotope effects like KIEs are invaluable tools in both physical and biological sciences.
