Covalent bonds are formed when electrons are shared between two atoms.

What are covalent bonds?

An electron exchange that results in the formation of electron pairs between atoms is known as a covalent bond. When atoms share electrons, a stable equilibrium of the attractive and repulsive forces between them is known as covalent bonding. These electron pairs are also known as shared pairs or bonding pairs. Another way to describe covalent bonds is as a bond formed when two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons. The two atomic nuclei are concurrently drawing these electrons to them. When the difference between the electronegativities of two atoms is too tiny for an electron transfer to take place to create ions, a covalent bond is formed.

A student observes the chemical process described by this equation:
choli [55]

Answer:

Both are equal

Explanation:

Mass of starting material i.e Aluminium is 4.480 * 10^{-23} grams

The weight of oxygen is 2.65 * 10^{-23}

There are 4 atoms of aluminium and 3 atoms of oxygen

Thus, the total mass of starting material is

4 * mass of one atom of aluminium + 6 * mass of one atom of oxygen

4 * 4.480 * 10^{-23} + 6* 2.65 * 10^{-23}

35.1 * 10^{-23} grams

Mass of new substance is also equal to

4 * mass of one atom of aluminium + 6 * mass of one atom of oxygen

4 * 4.480 * 10^{-23} + 6* 2.65 * 10^{-23}

35.1 * 10^{-23} grams

Use the rules (in order) to assign oxidation numbers to each of the elements in the compounds below.
xz_007 [3.2K]

Answer:

Explanation:

The oxidation number is an integer that represents the number of electrons that an atom receives or makes available to others when it forms a given compound.

The oxidation number is positive if the atom loses electrons, or shares them with an atom that has a tendency to accept them. And it will be negative when the atom gains electrons, or shares them with an atom that has a tendency to give them up.

Chemical compounds are electrically neutral. That is, the charge that all the atoms of a compound contribute must be globally null. That is, when having positive or negative charges in a compound, their sum must be zero.

There are some rules for determining oxidation numbers in compounds. Among them it is possible to mention:

 • Hydrogen (H) has an oxidation number +1 with nonmetals and - 1 with metals.
 • Oxygen (O) presents the oxidation number -2
 • Fluorine F has a unique oxidation state -1

Then:

 • NOF: N+(-2)+(-1)=0 → N=3 → oxidation number of nitrogen (N) is +3, oxidation number of oxygen (O) is -2 and oxidation number of fluorine (F) is -1.
 • ClF₅: Cl + 5*(-1)=0 → Cl= 5 → oxidation number of chlorine (Cl) is +5 and oxidation number of fluorine (F) is -1.
 • H₂SO₃: 2*(+1)+S+3*(-2)=0 → S=4 → oxidation number of hydrogen (H) is +1, oxidation number of oxygen (O) is -2 and oxidation number of sulfur (S) is +4.

Are many common foods we eat more likely to be acidic or basic
myrzilka [38]
Consumption of the acidic and the basic is equal during human's life. For example, acidic ones add sourness to things we eat and what about basic - the taste is quite bitter that conidered to be less enjoyable. Every our dish consists of both listed elements but our bodies are already accustomed to this fact.
Hope that helps.
