D. Elevate the affected area.

The therapy measures for musculoskeletal injuries may be remembered by using the acronym RICE, which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Muscle, nerve, tendon, joint, cartilage, and spinal disc injuries and diseases are referred to as musculoskeletal disorders (MSD).

Rest encourages recovery and helps to stop further harm. During the first 24-48 hours following an accident, intermittently applying moist or dry cold packs for 20–30 minutes causes vasoconstriction, which lessens bleeding, edema, and pain.

Take precautions to prevent tissue and skin damage from extreme cold.  An elastic compression bandage supports the wounded tissues while controlling bleeding and edema. Swelling is controlled by elevation.
