By changing saturation, value, and hue, we can create about a million (or more) discriminable colors.

Soda is a solution of water saturated with carbon dioxide. For this reason, carbon dioxide gas forms bubbles when decompressed. When chocolate powder is added to milk and not dissolved, it forms a saturated solution.

Saturation refers to the amount of white light mixed with hue. Highly saturated colors like the circle on the left contain little or no white light. Lightness refers to intensity characterized by the amount of shade mixed with hue.

Highly saturated images have vivid, rich, bright colors, while less saturated images tend to be grayscale. Most monitor devices, televisions, and graphics editing programs have options to increase or decrease saturation.

Although textile mills and tobacco factories emerged in the South during this time, the plans for a New South largely failed.
