Austronesians are the migrant population that likely originated in Taiwan and depended on fishing, farming, and domesticated animals for their livelihood.

A vast group of people who speak Austronesian languages can be found in Taiwan, Maritime Southeast Asia, Micronesia, coastal New Guinea, Island Melanesia, Polynesia, and Madagascar. They are known as the Austronesian peoples or Austronesian-speaking peoples.

According to the current scientific agreement, they came through a prehistoric seaborne migration from pre-Han Taiwan between 1500 and 1000 BCE. This movement is known as the Austronesian expansion. By roughly 2200 BCE, Austronesians had made it as far north as the Batanes Islands in the Philippines.
