What is reciprocal determinism?

A key idea in Albert Bandura's social learning theory is reciprocal determinism. Reciprocal determinism also referred to as triadic reciprocality, is a theory in which there are three variables that affect conduct: the individual (including their thoughts and feelings), their surroundings, and the behavior itself.

B.F. Skinner's theory of learning and other earlier theories of learning claimed that people's conduct was always influenced by their environment. They claimed that people were merely passive beneficiaries of environmental forces.

The idea of reciprocal determinism holds that both cognitive processes and external elements, such as social cues, have an impact on a person's behavior. Consider a child who misbehaves because they dislike going to school. As a result, the instructor chastises the youngster, which can make them act out even more. Anything you do that could result in reward or punishment is referred to as behavior.

The individual component consists of all the qualities that have previously earned rewards. A person's expectations, beliefs, and distinctive personality traits are all crucial psychological and cognitive aspects that influence how they behave.

At any given time or circumstance, the behavior itself may or may not be rewarded. The prior student will probably modify their behavior if they are aware that their teacher is more likely to reward them if they wait until the end of the school day to transgress.

Therefore, Randy's substandard academic performance is both a result and a cause of his feelings of academic inferiority. this best illustrates the importance of reciprocal determinism.
