Define the terms shear stress and shear strain, illustrating your answer by means of a simple sketch. Two circular bars, one of

brass and the other of steel, are to be loaded by a shear load of 30 kN. Determine the necessary diameter of the bars (a) in single shear, (b) in double shear, if the shear stress in the two materials must not exceed 50 MN/m2 and 100 MN/mZ respectively.

<h3>What is shear stress?</h3>

Shear stress or tangential stress is a type of stress generated by forces applied in opposite ways, but in similar directions in the analyzed material.

With that being said:

a) The necessary diameter of the bars in single shear is 27,6mm, this because:

Tb = \frac{F}{A}\\ Tb = \frac{F}{\frac{\pi }{4} .d^2}\\ d^2 = \frac{4F}{\pi Tb} = \frac{4.30.10^3}{\pi .50.10^6}=0,0276m = 27,6mm

b) The necessary diameter in double shear, if the shear stress in the two materials must not exceed 50 MN/m2 and 100 MN/mZ respectively is 13,8mm, this because:

Ts=\frac{F}{2A}\\ d^2=\frac{4.30.10^3}{2\pi .100.10^6}=13,8mm

A large steel tower is to be supported by a series of steel wires; it is estimated that the load on each wire will be 19,000N. D
zhuklara [117]

Answer:

11.6 mm

Explanation:

With a factor of safety of 5 and a yield strength of 900 MPa the admissible stress is:

σadm = strength / fos

σadm = 900 / 5 = 180 MPa

The stress is the load divided by the section:

σ = P / A

σ = 4*P / (π*d^2)

Rearranging:

d^2 = 4*P / (π*σ)

d = \sqrt{4*P / (\pi*\sigma)}

d = \sqrt{4*19000 / (\pi*180*10^6)} = 0.0116 m = 11.6 mm

Answer:

Plumbing  using a one-way check valve to stop water flowing back on a pump when the pump shuts off.

Explanation:

Diodes are like check valves, keeping current from flowing both ways.  Used to create d.c. out of a.c by rectification.  Also to block flow if d.c. power like a battery is hooked up in reverse polarity.

A metal wire of resistance R is cut into seven equal pieces that are then placed together side by side to form a new cable with
netineya [11]

Answer:

Explanation:

So therefore new Resistance R¹ = R/49

Resistance of a wire

R = ¶ * L/A

Where ¶ = resistivity of wire

L = length of wire

A = cross sectional area of wire

So therefore if the wire is cut into 7 equal lengths and joined together to form one with new Resistance R¹

So new length L¹ = 1L/7

New A¹ = 7A

So therefore R¹ = ¶ (L/7) /(7A)

So R¹ = ¶*L/A(49)

Since R = ¶L/A

So therefore R¹ = R/49
