A hiker walks from

Physics

(a) The distance travelled by the hiker is 7.16 km

(b) If the hiker desires to return to his starting point, he should move at 201.71° with respect to east.

Form a right angled triangle with the distance between initial and final points as hypotenuse. The adjacent side will be the total distance travelled on x-direction and the opposite side will be the total distance travelled in y-direction.

Adjacent side = x_{2} - x_{1} = 3.05 - ( - 3.6 )

Adjacent side = 6.65 km

Opposite side = y_{2} - y_{1} = 5.9 - 3.25

Opposite side = 2.65 km

According to Pythagoras theorem,

Hypotenuse^{2} = Opposite side^{2} + Adjacent side^{2}

Hypotenuse^{2} = 2.65^{2} + 6.65^{2}

Hypotenuse = √ ( 7.02 + 44.22 )

Hypotenuse = 7.16 km

sin θ = Opposite side / Hypotenuse

sin θ = 2.65 / 7.16

θ = sin^{-1} ( 0.37 )

θ = 21.71°

This is the angle in which the hiker travelled from initial to final direction. The angle in which the hiker should travel to return to initial point with respect to east is

θ = 21.71° + 180°

θ = 201.71°

Therefore,

(a) The distance travelled by the hiker is 7.16 km

(b) If the hiker desires to return to his starting point, he should move at 201.71° with respect to east.

An RV is traveling 60 km/h along a highway. A boy sitting near the driver of the RV throws a ball to another boy at the back end
alina1380 [7]

Answer:

Speed of the ball relative to the boys: 25 km/h

Speed of the ball relative to a stationary observer: 35 km/h

Explanation:

The RV is travelling at a velocity of

v_{RV}=+60 km/h

Here we have taken the direction of motion of the RV as positive direction.

The boy sitting near the driver throws the ball back with speed of 25 km/h, so the velocity of the ball in the reference frame of the RV is

v_B = -25 km/h

with negative sign since it is travelling in the opposite direction relative to the RV. Therefore, this is the velocity measured by every observer in the reference frame of the RV: so the speed measured by the boys is

v = 25 km/h

Instead, a stationary observer outside the RV measures a velocity of the ball given by the algebraic sum of the two velocities:

v = +60 km/h + (-25 km/h) = +35 km/h

So, he/she measures a speed of 35 km/h.

Bone has a Young's modulus of about
saveliy_v [14]

Answer: 4.74 mm

Explanation:

We can solve this problem with the following equation:

Y=\frac{stress}{strain} (1)

Where:

Y=1.8(10)^{10} Pa is the Young modulus for femur

stress=\frac{F}{A}=1.58(10)^{8} Pa is the stress (force F applied per unit of transversal area A) on the femur

strain=\frac{\Delta l}{l_{o}}

Being:

\Delta l the compression the femur can withstand before breaking

l_{o}=0.54 m is the length of the femur without compression

Writing the data in equation (1):

Y=\frac{\frac{F}{A}}{\frac{\Delta l}{l_{o}}} (2)

1.8(10)^{10} Pa=\frac{1.58(10)^{8} Pa}{\frac{\Delta l}{0.54 m}} (3)

Isolating \Delta l:

\Delta l=\frac{(1.58(10)^{8} Pa)(0.54 m)}{1.8(10)^{10} Pa} (4)

\Delta l=0.00474 m (5) This is the compression in meters

Converting this result to millimeters:

\Delta l=0.00474 m \frac{1000 mm}{1 m}=4.74 mm

Sound will travel slowest through which medium?
SSSSS [86.1K]

The speed of sound depends on the medium in which it is transported.

Sound travels fastest through solids, slower through liquids and slowest through gases.

So it will travel slowest through water at 55 degrees
