If we study assigned material until we feel we know all of it, and then review it several times, we will be practicing the study method of rehearsal.

Repetition is a key component of a rehearsal approach for knowledge retention. When a learner is given particular material to learn, such as a list, he will frequently try to memorise the information by repeatedly repeating it.

There are two types of rehearsal:

  1. Maintenance and
  2. Elaborative.

Maintenance rehearsal also known as rote memorisation involves repeating information loudly or in our head.

While, elaborative rehearsal is more elaborate and involves additional memory aids like mnemonic devices.
