Plane waves incident upon a small opening in a barrier will fan out and decrease in amplitude.

In physics, a plane wave is a special case of wave or field: a physical quantity whose value, at any moment, is constant through any plane that is perpendicular to a fixed direction in space.

For any position vector x in space and any time t, the value of such a field can be written as :

{\displaystyle F({\vec {x}},t)=G({\vec {x}}\cdot {\vec {n}},t),}

{\displaystyle F({\vec {x}},t)=G({\vec {x}}\cdot {\vec {n}},t),}{\displaystyle F({\vec {x}},t)=G({\vec {x}}\cdot {\vec {n}},t),}

where {\displaystyle {\vec {n}}}\vec is a unit-length vector, and {\displaystyle G(d,t)}{\displaystyle G(d,t)}  is a function that gives the field's value as dependent on only two real parameters: the time t, and the scalar-valued displacement

{\displaystyle d={\vec {x}}\cdot {\vec {n}}}{\displaystyle d={\vec {x}}\cdot {\vec {n}}}

of the point {\displaystyle {\vec {x}}}{\vec {x}} along the direction {\displaystyle {\vec {n}}}\vec. The displacement is constant over each plane perpendicular to {\displaystyle {\vec {n}}}\vec.

The values of the field may be scalars, vectors, or any other physical or mathematical quantity. They can be complex numbers, as in a complex exponential plane wave.

When the values of F are vectors, the wave is said to be a longitudinal wave if the vectors are always collinear with the vector {\displaystyle {\vec {n}}}\vec, and a transverse wave if they are always orthogonal (perpendicular) to it.

True or False. Atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere function together to create environments for the biosphere.
skelet666 [1.2K]

Answer:

True

Explanation:

Biosphere refer to regions of the earth(sphere) that supports life. It is made up of biotic and abiotic components. Its abiotic components are non-living components that support life and  is made up of the lithosphere (the earth crust,mantle) , atmosphere(area of gases and air which is  held by gravitational force) and the hydrosphere(all water bodies which includes ocean, sea, lakes, rivers etc).

A rocket sled accelerates at a rate of 49.0 m/s2 . Its passenger has a mass of 75.0 kg. (a) Calculate the horizontal component o
Katen [24]

Explanation:

It is given that,

Mass of the passenger, m = 75 kg

Acceleration of the rocket, a=49\ m/s^2

(a) The horizontal component of the force the seat exerts against his body is given by using Newton's second law of motion as :

F = m a

F=75\ kg\times 49\ m/s^2

F = 3675 N

Ratio, R=\dfrac{F}{W}

R=\dfrac{3675}{75\times 9.8}=5

So, the ratio between the horizontal force and the weight is 5 : 1.

(b) The magnitude of total force the seat exerts against his body is F' i.e.

F'=\sqrt{F^2+W^2}

F'=\sqrt{(3675)^2+(75\times 9.8)^2}

F' = 3747.7 N

The direction of force is calculated as :

\theta=tan^{-1}(\dfrac{W}{F})

\theta=tan^{-1}(\dfrac{1}{5})

\theta=11.3^{\circ}

Hence, this is the required solution.

First consider a Carnot engine that operates between a hot reservoir at 58°C and a cold reservoir at -17°C. In running 24 minute
jok3333 [9.3K]

Answer:

Explanation:

Given that,

Hot reservoir temperature is

TH = 58°C

TH = 58 + 273 = 331 K

Cold reservoir temperature

TC = -17°C

TC = -17°C + 273 = 256K

In 24minutes 590 J of heat was removed from hot reservoir

t = 24mins

t = 24 × 60 = 1440 seconds

Then,

Power is given as

P = E / t

P = 590 / 1440

P = 0.41 W

Since this removed from the hot reservoir, then, QH = 0.41W

We want to find heat expelled to the cold reservoir QX

Efficiency is given as

η = 1 - TH/TC = 1 - QH/QC

1 - TH/TC = 1 - QH/QC

TH/TC = QH/QC

Make QC subject of formula

QC = QH × TC / TH

QC = 0.41 × 256 / 331

QC = 0.317 W
