An enzyme catalyzes the formation of ATP from ADP and phosphate ion. What is its effect on the rate of hydrolysis of ATP to ADP

and phosphate? The rate of the reaction ATP → ADP + phosphate will decrease by the same factor that the rate for ADP + phosphate → ATP increased. The rate of the reaction ATP → ADP + phosphate will be enhanced by the same factor as the rate for ADP + phosphate → ATP. The catalyst will not alter the rate of the reaction ATP → ADP + phosphate. The rate of the reaction ATP → ADP + phosphate will increase, but by a smaller factor than for the reaction ADP + phosphate → ATP.

Answer:

Option B

Explanation:

An enzyme can be defined as the catalyst which increases the rate of reaction. The role of enzyme is to increase the overall rate of reaction by decreasing the activation energy.

In this case the rate at which dissociation of adenosine triphosphate into adenosine di-phosphate and inorganic phosphate will form( ATP → ADP + phosphate) will be enhanced by the same factor by which the the inorganic phosphate and adenosine di phosphate will combine to form adenosine triphosphate(ADP + phosphate → ATP).
