The following events contributed to the creation of an Spanish national identity:

 • The Reconquista took power from Muslim leaders. After having dominated their territory for 8 centuries, the Spanish finished their Reconquista in 1942 by expelling the Muslims from their last kingdom (caliphate) in Granada. The Reconquista had lasted itself since the 10th century.
 • The marriage of Isabella I and Ferdinand II united territory. Their marriage in 1469 united permanently the kingdoms of Castille and Aragon, that where the two main ones in the Iberian Peninsula at the time and which constitute the largest part of the current Spanish territory.
 • The Age of Exploration helped expand Spain’s influence. It all started with the sailors who conducted timid explorations around Africa but the most outstanding event was of course the expedition of Columbus and the arrival of the Spanish to American soil, which set the beginning of the Spanish Empire.

The rise of the Franks is related to the medieval French civilizations but not to the Spanish ones. The Hundred Years' War was a conflict between England and France. The Spanish Inquisition managed to spread around Europe, but it was an institution of terror and the first ones who suffered it were the Spanish civilians, therefore it is not something which contributes to their national pride.
