Answer:

a) w = 3.19 in

b)  σ = 20849.17 psi

Explanation:

Given

t = 3/4 in

L = 24 ft = 288 in

P = 50,000 lb

ΔL = 0.20 in

E = 30022811.71 lb/in²

a) We can apply the formula

ΔL = P*L/(A*E)   ⇒   A = P*L/(ΔL*E)

⇒  A = 50,000 lb*288 in/(0.20 in*30022811.71 lb/in²)

⇒  A = 2.398 in²

Then we have

A = w*t   ⇒    w = A/t

⇒    w = 2.398 in² /0.75 in

⇒    w = 3.198 in

b)  σ = P/A  ⇒      σ = 50,000 lb/2.398 in²

⇒      σ = 20849.17 psi

Answer:

a) 3.31 inches

b) 20139 psi

Explanation:

L = 24 ft = 24*12 = 288 inches

Let the elastic modulus of the steel bar (structured ASTM-A36) E = 29\times10^6 psi. If a 288 inches long bar must no elongate more than 0.2 inches, then its strain must be:

\epsilon = \frac{\Delta L}{L} = \frac{0.2}{288} = 0.000694

Then the tensile stress must not exceed

\sigma = \epsilon E = 0.000694*29*10^6 = 20139 psi

If the tensile load is 50000 lb then the cross-sectionarea must not be larger than

A = F/\sigma = 50000 / 20139 = 2.48 in^2

If it's 3/4 inches thick then the width must be

2.48 / (3/4) = 3.31 inches

For a copper-silver alloy of composition 25 wt% Ag-75 wt% Cu and at 775C (1425F) do the following: (a) Determine the mass frac
allochka39001 [22]

Answer:

a)

mass fraction of α = 0.796

mass fraction of β = 0.204

b)

mass fraction of primary α (Wα) = 0.734

mass fraction of  eutectic micro-constituents (We) = 0.266

c)

α in eutectic mixture = 0.062

Explanation:

Assumptions:

(i) the  system is in thermal equilibrium with its surroundings

(ii) There are no impurities or other alloying elements present

(a) Determine the mass fractions of α and β phases

From the Cu - Ag phase diagram, Cα = 8.0 wt% Ag, Cβ = 91.2 wt% Ag, and C0 = 25 wt% Ag .Using the lever-rule:

Total mass fraction of α = (Cβ - C0) / (Cβ - Cα) = (91.2 - 25) / (91.2 - 8) = 0.796

Total mass fraction of β = (C0 - Cα) / (Cβ - Cα) = (25 - 8) / (91.2 - 8) = 0.204

(b) Determine the mass fractions of primary α and eutectic microconstituents

Ceutetic = 71.9 wt.%Ag

mass fraction of primary α (Wα) = (Ceutetic - C0) / (Ceutetic - Cα) = (71.9 - 25) / (71.9 - 8) = 0.734

mass fraction of  eutectic micro-constituents (We) = (C0 - Cα) / (Ceutetic - Cα) = (25 - 8) / (71.9 - 8) = 0.266

(c) Determine the mass fraction of eutectic α.

From the eutetic reaction, L  ↔    α + β

Total α = Primary α + α in eutectic mixture

Therefore: α in eutectic mixture = Total α - Primary α = 0.796 - 0.734 = 0.062

What is a heat engine? State its efficiency (a sketch would be appropriate).
dimulka [17.4K]

Answer:

\eta =\dfrac{Q_1-Q_2}{Q_1}

Explanation:

Heat engine

 Heat engine is a device which produce work while consuming some amount of energy .This engine works in cycle.In other words we can say that Heat engine is a device which covert thermal or chemical energy in to mechanical energy and after that this mechanical energy can be use for producing mechanical work.

Heat engine takes heat from high temperature and rejects heat to lower temperature and producing work.

We know that efficiency given as

\eta =\dfrac{out\ put}{in\ put}

From diagram we can say that

Q_1=Q_2+W

So efficiency

\eta =\dfrac{w}{Q_1}

\eta =\dfrac{Q_1-Q_2}{Q_1}
