The medulla is the shortened form of medulla oblongata which is the lower portion of the brain stem that connects the brain and spinal cord with most of sensory and motor fibres. It contains the cardiac, respiratory, vomiting, and vasomotor centers that regulates autonomic functions such as heart rate, breathing, swallowing, sneezing, blood pressure etc. When a victim of an accident experiences loss of control in these areas, the medulla is most likely to be affected.
A victim of a car wreck with head injuries, whose involuntary bodily processes (breathing, heartbeat, etc.) have been disturbed, probably has had damage done to the medulla which is located in the hind brain. The head injuries led to the involuntary bodily processes (breathing, heartbeat, etc.) been disturbed.
