When you are doing a experiment, you are testing if your hypothesis is correct or false. If your hypothesis is false, you have to disgard it. If it is correct, you have to do many more parallels, and if they also confirm your hypothesis, your hypothesis can become a theory.

Answer: the purpose of experiment is to prove if the hypothesis is true or wrong. If the experiment is true, further investigation will be conducted and if this is true over a wide range of applications, then it becomes a theory. If the experiment is wrong, the hypothesis will either be disregarded or modified.
