How is 6/12 equivalent to 1/12

It is not. 

6/12≠1/12

Say you where having a party and brought 2 one dozen boxes of cupcakes. After the party was over, you look in the first box and find 6 of the twelve cupcakes left. You look in the second box and find 1 of the twelve cupcakes left. The number of cupcakes left in each box isn't the same. The two fractions aren't equivalent.

6/12 means 6 pieces out of 12,
1/12 is one piece out of 12.
