You are taxed at a rate of 5% for all online purchases and 8.5% for all in-store purchases. If you pay a total of 40$ in taxes i

n addition to spending $500 on purchases (pre-tax), how much money did you spend online, and how much was spent in the store? (before tax, to the cent)
Need two equations and please solve!

It already provided one equation. Which is:

0.05x + 0.085y = 40

$x+y=500$
$0.05x+0.085y=40
$
Multiply both sides of second equation by 20 to get $x+1.7y=800$
Subtract that from first equation to get $0.7y=300$
Divide both sides by 0.7 to get $y=428.571$ , so about $428.57 was spent in store. This leaves $500-428.57=$71.43$ that was spent online
