Religion has often served as the main cause of war (the Crusades), religion has helped ease the terror witnessed by soldiers in war, religion helps soldiers gather courage in war, religion is often also used as an excuse for war.

These are four ways how war and religion are connected.

1. Religion has often been used as a justification for war against non-believers. This is one of the most obvious ways in which these two topics are connected. A clear example are The Crusades. Islamist groups such as ISIS also wage wars for religious reasons.

2. Conflicts within a particular religion has often resulted in wars. This occurs when members of the same religion disagree on issues such as doctrine or succession. An example is the Strasbourg Bishops' War.

3. Religious fervour has often been used as inspiration during wars. This is the case of characters such as Joan of Arc during the Hundred Years' War.

4. Wars are sometimes started in order to recover things or territory that are important to a particular religion. Some might consider the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to fall under this category.
