As the name suggests, nuclear fusion involves combination of nuclei to produce energy e.g. the sun's surface has hydrogen nuclei combined with helium producing the energy, whilst nuclear fission is the event where an unstable nucleus is split producing energy along. In fission, melt-down is an issue to watch out for whilst not considered as a safety concern in nuclear fusion. A controlled environment for both is essential for the two reaction.
