This treaty ended the war between China and the United Kingdom.

The Treaty of Nanking was a peace treaty that ended the First Opium War between the United Kingdom and the Qing dynasty of China on August 1842.

This treaty changed the conditions of foreign trade imposed by the Canton System, in force since 1760. Four additional ports opened for international trade and foreign merchants gained the right to trade with whomever they wished to trade. Some trade tariffs in the ports were also established and adopted by the British as well as the Chinese.

This treaty eased the long - existing tensions between these two countries.
