Robert F Kennedy's main purpose was to quickly make a statement shortly after hearing of the assassination of the great black civil rights leader Martin Luther Kingtnd interrupted his political campaign to do it and in a black neighborhood. His main purpose was to ask for compassion and understanding between black and white people in the US and to oppose violence in the race relations.

Robert F. Kennedy went ahead with the rally because he believed someone should tell the black and minority citizens of Indianapolis the news of King's death rather than just hear it on the news. He wanted to tell them again that King would not want them to react in hate, violence but to react with compassion and justice. Kennedy said the nation wanted to heal, not more bloodshed.
