In Siri's coin purse, she has 6 dimes and 4 quarters. Martha has 5 dimes and 3 quarters. Siri thinks that the ratio of dimes to

quarters in both purses is the same because they each have 2 more quarters than dimes. Is the same ratio of dimes to quarters maintained? Justify your response.

Answer:

The ratios are not equal.

Step-by-step explanation:

To justify the answer we will assume the dimes and quarters.

Let number of dimes be denoted by 'x'.

Let number of quarters denoted by 'y'.

In Siri's coin purse

Number of dimes (x) = 6

Number of quarters (y) = 4

Therefore ratio of quarter to dimes we get;

\frac{x}{y}=\frac{6}{4} ⇒ equation 1.

In Martha Coin purse.

Number of dimes (x) = 5

Number of quarters (y) = 3

Therefore ratio of quarter to dimes we get;

\frac{x}{y}=\frac{5}{3} ⇒ equation 2.

Now we will check if both have the same ratios.

We will check by making both equation 1 and equation 2 equal.

\frac{6}{4}=\frac{5}{3}

By cross multiplication we get;

18\neq 20

Hence the ratios are not equal.

A rectangular swimming pool with a flat bottom is 20 feet by 12 feet. How long will it take to fill the swimming pool to 5 feet
Tasya [4]
20 feet * 12 feet * 5 feet
= 20 * 12 * 5 feet ^3
= 1200 feet^3

1200 feet^3 / (30 feet^3 / minute)
= (1200 / 30) minutes
= (120 / 3) minutes
= 40 minutes

Solve these word problems. Explain and show how you got your answer.
kow [346]
Number 1. <span>So the duck's OWN speed (if flying without any wind) with the wind behind him is:
 Where x/10 is the wind speed
The duck's OWN speed (if flying without any wind) with the wind against him is:
 Where x/10 is the wind speed Remember
So we have two equations that must equal each other since they both represent the duck's speed.
 We need to rearrange to find x

 Add x/10 to both sides and subtract (1600/10 from both sides gives:

so x must be 400/10 which 40 metres per minute.

Number 2.  </span>let s=salmon and c=current <span>
upstream __ s-c=100m/20 min __ s-c=5m/min

downstream __ s+c=100m/8min __ s+c=12.5m/min

adding the two equations __ s-c+(s+c)=5+12.5 __ 2s=17.5 __ s=8.75m/min

substituting __ 8.75+c=12.5 __ c=3.75m/min</span>

Gareth buys 2 oranges he pays with £1 coin and gets 52p change work out the cost of 1 orange
kap26 [50]

The cost of one orange is 76 p.

<h3>What is division?</h3>

Division is a mathematical operation that is used to determine the quotient of a set of numbers. The sign used to denote division is ÷.

<h3 /><h3>What is the cost of 1 orange?</h3>

The first step is to know how many pence makes a pound.

100 pence = 1 pound

The second step is to convert £1 52 p to pence

1 x 100 + 52 = 152p

The third step is to divide, 152 by 2

152/2 = 74p
