A commuter train passes a passenger platform at a constant speed of 40.4 m/s. The train horn is sounded at its characteristic fr

equency of 350 Hz. (a) What overall change in frequency is detected by a person on the platform as the train moves from approaching to receding? (Indicate whether the frequency increases of decreases with the sign of your answer.) The response you submitted has the wrong sign. Hz (b) What wavelength is detected by a person on the platform as the train approaches? Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. (a) -83.6 Hz

Due to the Doppler effect, the frequency of the sound of the train horn appears shifted to the observer at rest, according to the formula:

f' = (\frac{v}{v\pm v_s})f

where

f' is the apparent frequency

v = 343 m/s is the speed of sound

v_s is the velocity of the source of the sound (positive if the source is moving away from the observer, negative if it is moving towards the observer)

f is the original frequency of the sound

Here we have

f = 350 Hz

When the train is approaching, we have

v_s = -40.4 m/s

So the frequency heard by the observer on the platform is

f' = (\frac{343 m/s}{343 m/s - 40.4 m/s})(350 Hz)=396.7 Hz

When the train has passed the platform, we have

v_s = +40.4 m/s

So the frequency heard by the observer on the platform is

f' = (\frac{343 m/s}{343 m/s + 40.4 m/s})(350 Hz)=313.1 Hz

Therefore the overall shift in frequency is

\Delta f = 313.1 Hz - 396.7 Hz = -83.6 Hz

And the negative sign means the frequency has decreased.

(b) 0.865 m

The wavelength and the frequency of a wave are related by the equation

v=\lambda f

where

v is the speed of the wave

\lambda is the wavelength

f is the frequency

When the train is approaching the platform, we have

v = 343 m/s (speed of sound)

f = f' = 396.7 Hz (apparent frequency)

Therefore the wavelength detected by a person on the platform is

\lambda' = \frac{v}{f'}=\frac{343 m/s}{396.7 Hz}=0.865m

There are two blocks: one large one initially at rest, and a smaller one, initially moving to the right withsome speed. The smal
KATRIN_1 [288]

Answer:

Explanation:

Let the initial velocity of small block be v .

by applying conservation of momentum we can find velocity of common mass

25 v = 75 V , V is velocity of common mass after collision.

V = v / 3

For reaching the height we shall apply conservation of mechanical energy

1/2 m v² = mgh

1/2  x 75 x V² = 75 x g x 10

V² = 2g x 10

v² / 9 = 2 x 9.8 x 10

v² = 9 x 2 x 9.8 x 10

v = 42 m /s

small block must have velocity of 42 m /s .

Impulse by small block on large block

= change in momentum of large block

= 75 x V

= 75  x 42 / 3

= 1050 Ns.

The electrons in the beam of a television tube have a kinetic energy of 2.20 10-15 j. initially, the electrons move horizontally
dalvyx [7]
(a) The electrons move horizontally from west to east, while the magnetic field is directed downward, toward the surface. We can determine the direction of the force on the electron by using the right-hand rule:
- index finger: velocity --> due east
- middle finger: magnetic field --> downward
- thumb: force --> due north
However, we have to take into account that the electron has negative charge, therefore we have to take the opposite direction: so, the magnetic force is directed southwards, and the electrons are deflected due south.

b) From the kinetic energy of the electrons, we can find their velocity by using
K= \frac{1}{2}mv^2
where K is the kinetic energy, m the electron mass and v their velocity. Re-arranging the formula, we find
v= \sqrt{ \frac{2K}{m} }= \sqrt{ \frac{2 \cdot 2.20 \cdot 10^{-15} J}{9.1 \cdot 10^{-31} kg} }=6.95 \cdot 10^7 m/s

The Lorentz force due to the magnetic field provides the centripetal force that deflects the electrons:
qvB = m \frac{v^2}{r}
where
q is the electron charge
v is the speed
B is the magnetic field strength
m is the electron mass
r is the radius of the trajectory
By re-arranging the equation, we find the radius r:
r= \frac{mv}{qB}= \frac{(9.1 \cdot 10^{-31} kg)(6.95 \cdot 10^7 m/s)}{(1.6 \cdot 10^{-19} C)(3.00 \cdot 10^{-5} T)}=13.18 m

And finally we can calculate the centripetal acceleration, given by:
a_c =  \frac{v^2}{r}= \frac{(6.95 \cdot 10^7 m/s)^2}{13.18 m}=3.66 \cdot 10^{14} m/s^2
