Total number of books is obviously 9+6 = 15

Let m = #of math books and r=# of reading books.  Then m+r=15, where m and r are integers greater than zero.

Consider "9 math books" and "6 reading books."  The ratio of m to r is 9/6,
or 3/2.

9 math books and 6 reading books could go on ONE shelf with no books left over.  But we wanted to determine the greatest number of bookshelves Andy could use.

TWO shelves would be inappropriate, since we'd have to divide both 9 and 6 by 2, and we'd end up with fractional books.  No good.

THREE shelves would work.  We'd have to divide both 9 and 6 by 3,
which would signify 3 math books and 2 reading books on each of THREE shelves.

Four, five and six shelves would not work.  Can you explain why?

It should be 3 bookshelves. You put 3 of the math books on each one, then two reading books on each one. Hope this helps

Express the sum 7 + 14 + 21 + 28 + . . . + 105 using sigma notation.
olasank [31]
7+14+21+28+...+105=1*7+2*7+3*7+4*7+...+15*7

∑7*n=7*1+7*2+7*3+7*4+...+15*7=7+14+21+28+...+105
n=1

Ted is a long distance driver. It took him 30 min longer to drive 275km on the Trans-Canada highway west of Swift Current, Saska
IRISSAK [1]

Speed traveling west = x - 10 km /hr

275 / ( x-10) - 300 / x = 1/2

275 *2x - 300 (x-10)*2 = ( x-10) *x

550x - 600x +6000 = x^2 -10x

x^2 +40x - 6000 = 0

( x -60) ( x+100) = 0

x = 60

ANSWER East = 60 km/ hr West = 50 km /hr

CHECK

300 /60 = 5 hours

275 /50 = 5.5 hours

Quoteint of powers
(x^m)/(x^n)=x^(m-n)

we know that 8=x^3

so
(2^5)/8=2^2 can be rewritten as
(2^5)/(2^3)=2^2
and 5-3=2 so it's true

answer is
third one
by simplifieng 8 to 2^3 to make both powers base two, and subtraction the exponents

The area of a rectangle is 56 cm. The length is 2cm more than x and width is 5 cm less than twice x. Solve for x. Round to the n
ra1l [238]
Area = Length * Width = l * w
l = x + 2
w = 2x - 5
Area = (x + 2)(2x - 5) = 56
Area = 2x^2 -x  - 10 = 56
Area = 2x^2 - x - 66 = 0 Now you have to factor this thing.
Area = (2x + 11)( x - 6) = 0 This is more or less done by guessing.
2x + 11 = 0 can't work. x would be negative.
x - 6 = 0
x = 6.

Check
=====
l = x + 2
l = 6 + 2
l = 8

w = 2*x - 5
w = 2*6 - 5
w = 12 - 5
w = 7

l*w = 8*7 = 56. It checks.
