Foodborne illness is indeed a disease that is transmitted to people by food. Most foodborne diseases are caused by consuming contaminated foods.

EXPLANATION:

In most cases, foodborne diseases are infectious caused by a variety of viruses, bacteria, and parasites. There are also foodborne diseases that are poisonings, which are mostly caused by harmful chemicals or toxins that have contaminated food. However, a foodborne disease can also be caused by other factors. Some of which include contact with animals or through the person-to-person spread.

Foods associated with foodborne illness:

  • Any foods that are touched by a person who is ill with diarrhea or vomiting.
  • Raw foods or animal origins such as raw meat, raw eggs, and unpasteurized milk.
  • Unpasteurized fruit juices or cider.
  • Fruits and vegetables that are contaminated with animal waste when manure is used to fertilize produce in the field.

Symptoms of foodborne illness:

  • Diarrhea or vomiting that typically lasts for 1-7 days.
  • Nausea, cramps, fever, and fatigue.
  • For foodborne illness caused by a pathogen, some people may suffer from the “stomach flu”.
