Continental tectonic plates have a lesser density than the oceanic plates, that's partly why they are higher.   Continental plates are also much thicker (40 km, 25 miles) than the oceanic places (6 km, 4 miles).

The oceanic plates are of course also pressed down by the weight of the oceans, which is a huge force.
