denpristay [2]

Answer: CHANNEL PROTEINS provide openings in the plasma membrane for substances to flow through without changing structure, and CARRIER PROTEINS allow passage of substances through the plasma membrane after undergoing a subtle change in shape.

Explanation: They are described thus:

A channel protein is a protein that allows the transport of specific substances across a cell membrane.

Carrier proteins are proteins that carry substances from one side of a biological membrane to the other. Many carrier proteins are found in a cell’s membrane, though they may also be found in the membranes of internal organelles such as the mitochondria, chloroplasts, nucleolus, and others.

Water is a unique compound with properties which are elemental for the existence of life. List six of these properties and how t
Luba_88 [7]

Here, we are required to list six of the properties of water and how they are essential for the existence of life.

These properties include:

  1. Water is a universal solvent
  2. Water is highly cohesive
  3. Water is a Substrate for microbial proliferation.
  4. Water supports cellular structure.
  5. Water has considerable buffering capability.
  6. Water is involved in Catabolic and Anabolic reactions.

  1. Water as a universal solvent is evident in its extensive capability to dissolve a variety of molecules and consequently transport them has earned it the designation of “universal solvent,” and it is this ability that makes water such an invaluable life-sustaining force. Biologically, water’s role as a solvent helps cells transport and use substances like oxygen or nutrients such as water-soluble vitamins.
  2. The cohesive property of water molecules helps plants take up water at their roots. Cohesion also contributes to water’s high boiling point, which is vital in animals body temperature regulation.
  3. Water serves as a substrate for Microbial proliferation because microorganisms grow best in high moisture environment.
  4. Water supports cellular structure: Water is quite important in biological structures. Water fills cells to help maintain shape and structure. The water inside many cells (including those that make up the human body) creates pressure that opposes external forces, similar to putting air in a balloon thereby creating a cushion.
  5. Water has considerable buffering capability: water buffers cells thereby protecting them from the dangerous effects of acids and bases. Highly acidic or basic substances, like bleach or hydrochloric acid, are corrosive to even the most durable biological materials.
  6. Water is involved in Catabolic and Anabolic reactions: Water is directly involved in biochemical reactions to build and break down important components of the cell. Photosynthesis, the process in plants that creates sugars for all life forms, requires water. Water also participates in building larger molecules in cells.
