Carbon Monoxide, a by product and a pollutant, when inhaled replaces oxygen which in turn devastates the body. It affects the heart directly by stopping the oxygen flow which in turn reduces the pumping capacity and can permanently impair it's cardiac function.
I think in our world, the communities created stronger bonds. The whole world went crazy with the presidents and other stuff, but each community came together to support the weak and help one another.
