If one were to study this experimentally, one would have a control and an experimental group which would enable us to see how attention changes in time in a group of children not receiving sugar and a group of children receiving sugar. In a survey method, we would just hand out questionnaires which would enable us to see a similar thing but with more noise in the dataset.
