When looking at it from a physics standpoint, the thick padding decreases the amount of force that a player experiences. Force equals mass times acceleration where acceleration is distance over time. The thick padding increases the amount of time the player makes contact with the post which decreases force.

F_{T} = The horizontal tension on the string

l = Length  of the measured mass of string

There fore the wave propagates more slowly, or slows down when it changes its travel medium from one of lower linear mass density to a different medium having a higher density

The speed of the transmitted pulse reduces in the heavier string
