A day at the theatre was a thrilling event. A flag would be raised on the day of a performance to advertise the production. Thes

e flags were color coded—a black flag indicated tragedy, white represented comedy and red announced a play based on history. Hundreds of people would gather around merchant stalls and refreshment stands waiting for the trumpet blast that announced the start of the play. The atmosphere was quite festive. What can the reader conclude from this passage? (A.)During Shakespeare's time, theatre was a major form of entertainment (B.) Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare's most famous tragedy.(C.) Shakespearian theatre was primarily for the literate nobles. (D.)Lack of electricity made it difficult to produce quality theatre.

I personally would pick A, and here's why;

B) Romeo And Juliet wasn't mentioned. The black flag part indicates tragedy, but never is Romeo and Juliet mentioned.

C) I can imagine that if they raised color coded flags, as opposed to big signs with letters on them, it was because they welcomed more than just literate nobles.

D) Never mentioned a t a l l . Unless there's a missing paragraph, electricity is quite irrelevant in this passage.

I hope that all helps :)

How does beginning paragraph 5 with the phrase "Neuroscientists have suggested" contribute to the meaning of the passage?
JulijaS [17]

The phrase "Neuroscientists have suggested" contributes to the meaning of the passage by showing how the advice or input of scientists can shape the way in which data is understood or applied.

The word "suggested" tells us that neuroscientists are putting forward into consideration the way in which data is understood. But this is not compulsory and what they consider is not a "law", that is why they "suggest" and not "oblige". That means that they advise.

Write a summary of this excerpt from "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" to confirm your understanding of the speech.
Blababa [14]

The correct answer to this open question is the following.

This is the summary.

Frederick Douglass was an African American reformer and abolitionist who, on July 5, 1852, was invited a keynote speaker during the Independence Day celebration. There, he delivered a controversial speech about the impact of independence on black people living in America.

Right there, in the Corinthian Hall of Rochester, in the state of New York, Douglass delivered a controversial speech nobody expected. He set the tone of the speech since the very beginning of his words when he literally said "This fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice. I must mourn."

That really caught people's attention. And that was just the beginning.

In his speech, Douglass recognized the value and courage of the United States founding fathers but clearly established that those rights stated in the US Constitution were not for everyone. They were just for the white people. Not the African American people who have been suffering for racist segregation and most in the South were suffering because they were slaves.
