A haploid cell is a cell that only has one of each chromosome. This is compared to diploid cells, that have two of each chromosome (which are paired).

The chromosomes are the condensed structures present at the time of cell division. Every somatic cell contains all the chromosome in pair, so, they are diploid cells.

The cells, which have only a single chromosome from the pair is known as a haploid cell.

For example: A diploid human cell has a total of 46 chromosomes, which have 22 pair of autosomes and 2 allosomes or sex chromosome. But, the gametes (egg or sperm) contains only 23 chromosome out of which 22 are autosomes and 1 is sex chromosome.
