Heat production are all normal changes that can take place with a chemical reaction. Not all of them will appear as a symptom, but if one of them does, you likely have some sort of chemical change.

The only thing you could be suspicious of is a change in shape. That might happen with some sort of physical occurrence, like going beyond a melting point, but not a chemical one.
