The nurse is caring for a client with a knee sprain. what guidelines will the nurse teach the client about using an ice pack at
Svetach [21]

For each 20-minute therapy session, a cloth barrier should be placed around the ice pack.

The blood vessels under your skin constrict as a result of cold therapy for plantar fasciitis, decreasing blood flow. This process, known as vasoconstriction, reduces pain and swelling by paralyzing the local nerves.

For the best results, remember to:

  • Ice for 15 to 20 minute sessions, on and off.
  • Use a towel or other cloth as a barrier between the ice and your skin to prevent direct contact.
  • Use plastic wrap or an ice pack with a towel wrapped around the outside to compress the injured area. You can also use an ankle ice pack that covers most of your foot or a foot cold wrap that has straps to provide compression and keep the ice pack in place.
