X + 2 = -x - 8

add x to both sides
x + 2 + x = -x - 8 + x
2x + 2 = -8

subtract 2 from both sides
2x + 2 - 2 = -8 - 2
2x = -10

divide both sides by 2
2x         -10
---   =    -----
 2            2

x = -5

Hi!
Okay, so this actually isn't too bad! (For number 5) Just add the negative x over to get 2x. Then subtract 2 over to get -10. Then divide by 2 (-5) and you're done! For the rest, do the same thing. Get the x's on one side, get the regular numbers on the other, and divide! Hope that helped!

Find the area of the largest square contained by a circle of radius r = 1cm. Explain your answer and justify that it is correct.
Elena-2011 [213]

Answer:

2 square cm

Step-by-step explanation:

Given :

A square is inscribed in a circle whose radius is r = 1 cm

Therefore, the diameter of the circle is 2 r = 2 x 1

                                                                      = 2 cm.

So the diagonal of the square is 2r.

Using the Pythagoras theorem, we find each of the side of the triangle is $r \sqrt 2$.

Therefore, the area of the square is given by $\text{(side)}^2$

                                                                         = $(r\sqrt 2)^2$

                                                                         $= 2 r^2$

                                                                         $= 2 (1)^2$

                                                                         $=2 \ cm^2$

Hence the area of the largest square that is contained by a circle of radius 1 cm is 2 cm square.
