The 8th amendment. this amendment prohibits excessively high bail and fines as well as cruel and unusal punishment. think of this as the amendment that ensures the punishment fits the crime.
The separation of powers and checks and balances grants each branch of government with their own limits of power. This prevents tyranny because the other branches will check the one branch's limits on the power and stop it before it gets out of hand.
The first Amendment states that religion and expression should be protected.
