Religions have impacted the social status and roles of men and women, for they usually have a set of laws that believers had to follow

many religions set man higher than women, as men were "created first, and then women".

An example of this is Christianity: Women are to be the helper of men, and were created to help men in his work.

Because of their access to the largest body of water on the planet, international trade was possible (but wouldn't begin for another 75 or so years, assuming that this is in the mid-1800s).
