In research in cardiology and exercise physiology, it is often important to know the mass of blood pumped by a person's heart in

one stroke. This information can be obtained by means of a ballistocardiograph. The instrument works as follows: The subject lies on a horizontal pallet floating on a film of air. Friction on the pallet is negligible. Initially, the momentum of the system is zero. When the heart beats, it expels a mass m of blood into the aorta with speed v, and the body and platform move in the opposite direction with speed V. The speed of the blood can be determined independently (for example, by observing an ultrasound Doppler shift). Assume that the blood's speed is 43.5 cm/s in one typical trial. The mass of the subject plus the pallet is 54.0 kg. The pallet moves 6.55 10-5 m in 0.160 s after one heartbeat. Calculate the mass of blood that leaves the heart. Assume that the mass of blood is negligible compared with the total mass of the person. This simplified example illustrates the principle of ballistocardiography, but in practice a more sophisticated model of heart function is used.

Answer:

0.05081 kg

Explanation:

m_1 = Mass of blood

v_1 = 0.435 m/s

m_2 = Mass of subject and pallet = 54 kg

v_2 = Velocity of subject and pallet = \dfrac{Distance}{Time}=\dfrac{6.55\times 10^{-5}}{0.16}=0.000409375\ m/s

In this system the linear momentum is conserved so,

m_1v_1=m_2v_2\\\Rightarrow m_1=\dfrac{m_2v_2}{v_1}\\\Rightarrow m_1=\dfrac{54\times 0.000409375}{0.435}\\\Rightarrow m_1=0.05081\ kg

The mass of blood is 0.05081 kg

What determines the number of possible sublevels?
Talja [164]
<h2>Hello!</h2>

The answer is A.   the principal energy level

<h2>Why?</h2>

The principal energy level or principal quantum number n, tell us about the position of an determined electron in the energy levels relative to the greater average distance of an electron from the nucleus, the larger the value of n and the higher its energy.

The principal energy levels contains n sublevels, n^{2} orbitals and 2n^{2} electrons.

For example, the number 1, has one orbital which is contained in a energy sublevel, its called s orbital, and it's just an orbital with 2 electrons.

Have a nice day!

The graph in the accompanying figure (Figure 1) shows the magnitude of the force exerted by a given spring as a function of the
serious [3.7K]

The elastic potential energy stored in the stretched spring is 1 J.

<h3>What is Hooke's law?</h3>

Hooke's law states that; provided the elastic limit is not exceeded, the extension of the spring is directly proportional to the force on the spring.

Given that;

Force on the spring = 350 Newton

Distance stretched = 7 centimeters or 0.07 m

Hence;

F = ke

k = F/e = 350 Newton/0.07 m = 5000 N/m

Work done in stretching a spring = 1/2ke^2

= 0.5 × 5000 × (2 × 10^-2)^2 =1 J
